How to Guide on Unemployment

Eligibility for Unemployment Benefits (COVID-19)

  • Unemployed, Partial Unemployment due to reduced hours, or Shut down of an operation due to COVID-19.

  • Must be able to work, Ready to accept work immediately, and Actively looking for work each week.

How to Setup UI Online Account

  • Setup up a Benefits online Login at https://edd.ca.gov/Benefit_Programs_Online.htm and select Log In or Register.

  • Then select Register to create an account.

  • Information needed to Register

    • First and last name as provided to the Employment Development Department

    • Date of birth

    • Personal, non-shared, email address

    • Social Security number

    • EDD Customer Account Number(New employees who file a claim or reopen a claim will receive account number within 10 days)
       

How to Fill out UI Claim Online(Fastest way to file a claim)

  • Go to https://www.edd.ca.gov/ in the top right corner select Log In.

  • Under Benefits Programs Online at the bottom Select Log In or Register then select Log In.

  • Select File a Claim

  • Read the UI Claim Filing Instructions. Select Next to Continue.

  • Provide the following information

    • Last employer information including company name, supervisor’s name, address (mailing and physical location) and phone number

    • Last date worked and the reason you are no longer working

    • Gross earnings in the last week you worked, beginning with Sunday and ending with your last day of work

    • Information on all employers you worked for during the past 18 months, including name, address (mailing and physical location), the dates of employment, gross wages earned, hours worked per week, hourly rate of pay, and the reason you are no longer working.

    • Citizenship status, and, if you are not a U.S. citizen, information from your employment authorization document

  • Submit application and revisit edd.ca.gov to check the status of your application.

What to do if you don't receive an Account Number

  • Online: Go to Ask EDD and select the category Unemployment Insurance Benefits, the subcategory UI Online, and the topic EDD Customer Account Number. Select Continue at the bottom of the page to begin the process of submitting your message.

  • By Phone: Call 1-800-300-5616 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon (Pacific Time), Monday through Friday, except on state holidays.
